3rd Assistant Director (3rd AD)

The 3rd AD runs on-set execution under the 2nd Assistant Director (2nd AD). Manages extras placement, set readiness checks, and the AD team's moment-to-moment operational delivery during shooting.

What the role does

• Manages background extras on set in coordination with Extras Coordinator — placement, briefing, continuity
• Performs set readiness checks before takes
• Calls cast and crew from holding to set
• Maintains on-set continuity of background action across takes
• Supports Trainee AD on entry-level tasks

Position

Reports to 2nd Assistant Director (2nd AD). Supervises Trainee AD. Works closely with Extras Coordinator.

Career progression

SI Competency Framework Level 3 — Experienced. Path: Trainee AD → 3rd AD → 2nd Assistant Director (2nd AD) → 1st Assistant Director (1st AD).
