First Assistant Sound (Boom Operator)
The First Assistant Sound is the boom operator — the on-set role positioning a microphone on a boom pole to capture dialogue. Operates in direct coordination with the Production Sound Mixer.
What the role does
- Operates the boom pole during takes — positioning the microphone for optimal dialogue capture without entering frame
- Coordinates with the Production Sound Mixer on mic choice + positioning approach
- Manages boom + mic cabling on set
- Coordinates with camera + lighting on boom-shadow avoidance
- Supports radio mic placement on cast
Position
Reports to Production Sound Mixer. Works closely with the camera department to avoid boom shadows.
Career progression
SI Competency Framework Level 4 — Expert. Path: Sound Trainee → Second Assistant Sound → First Assistant Sound → Production Sound Mixer.
Working pattern + guild
