Colourist
The Colourist performs the picture grading — the final colour treatment on every frame, matching the Director of Photography (DoP / DP)'s intent and the film's emotional palette across each scene.
What the role does
- Grades every shot in the final picture
- Establishes the film's overall colour palette in collaboration with director + DoP
- Generates delivery LUTs for the various distribution formats (theatrical DCP, broadcast HDR, streaming SDR)
- Coordinates with Online Editor on conform + delivery
Position
Reports to director + producer + Director of Photography (DoP / DP) on grade. Typically based at a specific post house.
Career progression
Long-arc specialist career through colour-correction operator + assistant colourist roles.
