Camera Operator

The Camera Operator physically operates the camera during shooting. Distinct from the Director of Photography (DoP / DP) — many productions have the DoP also operating ("DoP/Operator"), but on larger productions or productions with multiple cameras, the operator role splits out.

What the role does

• Operates the camera during takes — framing, panning, tilting, following action
• Coordinates with Focus Puller (1st AC) on focus marks + lens choices
• Coordinates with Director of Photography (DoP / DP) on framing + composition direction
• Manages camera placement + movement within the Director of Photography (DoP / DP)'s blocking
• On multi-camera setups, may be designated A/B/C/D camera operator

Position

Reports to Director of Photography (DoP / DP). Supervises Focus Puller (1st AC) + below.

Career progression

Path: Camera Trainee → Clapper Loader (2nd AC) → Focus Puller (1st AC) → Camera Operator → Director of Photography (DoP / DP).
