Editor
The Editor (Picture Editor) is the head of the post-production picture department. Assembles the film from captured footage in collaboration with the director — making choices about shot selection, pacing, structure, performance, and emotional rhythm.
Often described as the third storyteller alongside the director + writer.
What the role does
- Assembles the editor's cut as principal photography progresses
- Refines the cut through director's cut → producer's cut → picture lock stages
- Coordinates with Sound Editor on temp sound + spotting
- Coordinates with Colourist + Online Editor on finishing
- Supervises Assistant Editor + post-production assistants
Position
Reports to director + producer on creative cut.
Career progression
Path: Assistant Editor → Editor. Often a long-arc career — established editors with feature credits + industry recognition.
