Second Assistant Sound

The Second Assistant Sound provides utility support to the sound department — cabling, kit prep, frequency coordination, secondary boom support when more than one boom is in play.

What the role does

• Manages sound cabling on set
• Preps mic + recorder kit at start of day
• Handles radio mic frequency coordination in busy RF environments
• Operates a second boom when scene coverage requires it
• Supports the First Assistant Sound (Boom Operator) and Production Sound Mixer

Position

Reports to Production Sound Mixer. Works alongside First Assistant Sound (Boom Operator).

Career progression

SI Competency Framework Level 3 — Experienced. Path: Sound Trainee → Second Assistant Sound → First Assistant Sound (Boom Operator).
