Garda Vetting
Garda Vetting is the statutory check operated by the National Vetting Bureau (part of An Garda Síochána) for any person working in a relevant role with children or vulnerable adults. Required under the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012-2016 (the NVB Acts).
When required on a production
For crew working with minors. The most common triggers:
- Cast members under 18 in the production
- Crew with structured 1:1 contact with minor cast (chaperones, tutors, intimacy coordinator if working with minor cast)
- Anyone in a position of authority over the child (department heads on departments interacting heavily with the children)
How vetting works
The NVB issues a vetting disclosure after assessing the person against the relevant criminal-record databases. Disclosure references are typically valid for the engagement, with renewal cycles for ongoing roles.
Pre-flight checklist
Productions casting minors should track, at minimum:
- Which crew members are flagged as gv_required = 1
- Disclosure reference for each
- Disclosure date
- Renewal due date
In Togra
Per-project crew register at /crew.php carries the gv_required flag + disclosure reference + dates. The Casting Director hub surfaces "Garda vetting outstanding" per project where minors are cast.
Related but separate
Child performance licences is the parallel obligation for the minors themselves (employer-licence side). Garda Vetting is the parallel obligation for the crew working with them (background-check side). Both apply on any production with minor cast.
