Script Supervisor

Last verified 28 May 2026

The Script Supervisor is the continuity head of department on a production. Tracks every detail of every take so the post-production editor can cut a coherent film — dialogue matches script, action matches across shots, props are in the right hands, costumes match the previous setup.

What the role does

  • Maintains the lined script — annotated with each shot, take number, action notes, continuity flags
  • Tracks continuity of action / costume / props / hair + makeup across shots
  • Reports timing — running time of each scene, cumulative film length
  • Manages the production log / daily report — record of takes, prints, durations, problems
  • Communicates continuity issues to the 1st Assistant Director (1st AD) for resolution
  • Is the editor's principal input during post — the lined script is the editor's reference

Position

Reports operationally to 1st Assistant Director (1st AD) on set; reports creatively to the director. Supervises Trainee Script Supervisor when present.

Career progression

SI Competency Framework Level 5 — HoD/Expert. Path: Trainee Script Supervisor → Script Supervisor. Becoming a Script Supervisor is its own progression, not typically a stepping stone to another department.

Working pattern + guild
